First lesson back after christmas.

To start our project on the music magazine, we were asked to categorise different music magazine front covers into different genres. This helped me to decide what music genre i was going to have my magazine for, and how other publishers enhanced the genre by having a certain artist on the front page, colour, masthead and coverlines.

Evaluation of third front cover.

Evaluation of front cover
When we look at this front cover we can see that the central image is showing direct mode of address. The central image is a medium shot which shows enough of the model.
I then added four coverlines and one incentive; these were
‘Distracted? Not any more!’ Many of the students have told me that they are easily distracted. Either when it’s at home doing work or in school doing work, so therefore knowing how to zone out and concentrate would be ideal to have on the front cover of my magazine.
‘Everything needs to be balanced’ Balance is a key thing to handle when in 6th form, but many students find it hard to do. A good balance will give them the good grades they need and the social life they will love. Every student wants to be able to balance everything so knowing that there is a guide on how to do it in the magazine is definitely going to persuade the audience.
'Stories on embarrassing moments!' The students would enjoy having some humour in the magazine, which they could maybe relate to in their lives.
'Jack; Reveals his Uni success!' It has started to get extremely hard to get into university, so to hear a story from a student into making it easy would be something that would persuade the students into buying the magazine.
'10 free driving lessons' 17 or 18 year olds struggle to pay for driving lessons, so to see this on front cover would definitely entice the students into buying the magazine.
I feel that on this front cover, the masthead stands out a lot more than in the other front covers. I believe its because the coverlines and incentive are more spread out over the page, and there is a plain background. I will take this advantage on with my music magazine.
The font size of the incentive and coverlines are to similiar. When i design my music magazine i will make sure the font size is different to make sure that each one stands out in their own way.
I will make sure i work on my seal of approval for my music magazine because i feel that it is a weakness.
Using different genders on each cover gave a varied approach as I had a selection to chose from therefore they could appeal to different target audiences. I think if I'd done a cover with a girl and a boy on similar to my second cover however, that could've made it better. I'm also pleased with how I used photoshop to enhance the look of my front covers, as I have never used it before.

Evaluation of second front cover.

Evaluation of front covers

This is the second school magazine front cover i desgined for my AS Level.
Again, we were asked to add four more coverlines and 1 more incentive, however they had to be different.
I chose to add; ‘Top 20 places to visit for Christmas shopping’ As Christmas is approaching, many of the students are wondering where they should go to get nice presents for their family and friends. Therefore adding key shopping centres in the magazine would attract the audience.
Also, ‘Get your CV up to scratch!’ Many students are finding it hard to be employed, so if they know they can get their CV perfect then they will definitely be interested in buying the magazine.
Secondly, ‘How to host a cracking party!’ After those hard working weeks at school, many of the students would want a night off, especially when a party is involved. Being a great host would not only boost their street cred but let them have fun aswell.
Also, 'Rukaya; Reveals her revising tips' As my target audience were asked if they wanted an educational or social magazine or both and the concluded answer was both. I chose to have a coverline on Rukaya, who is one of the girls as the central image because many students find it hard to revise, however if they see Rukaya on the front then they will definitely want to see how they can find it easier.
Finally, I decided on 'WIN £50 itunes voucher' as the incentive for this front cover as many students use itunes to listen to music, and music influences the students in a number of ways, such as helping them to revise. It's all ways in making my magazine look and sound interesting for the target audience.

The seal of approval stands out more on this front cover but is still a bit to plain. I am definitely going to work on my seal of approvals for my music magazine.

There are a varied amount of different colours that I have used for the fonts, this helps the magazine to look more attractive. Also, the variation of fonts for certain words help the coverline to stand out from the rest of them.

Evaluation of first front cover.

Evaluation of front covers

When creating my front covers I took out a questionnaire, which I handed out to 6th form students at Sponne School, in which helped me to choose a masthead for my front cover. I analysed my results and concluded that SPN was the most favourite. I asked for a reason why they felt that SPN worked the best for a school magazine. They concluded that SPN was very catchy, short but easy to remember.
We then had to then add four cover lines and one incentive to our front covers which would entice the audience to read the magazine.
‘Feeling that CBA feeling?’ was added as one of the cover lines. I chose to use this as all of the students would know what this phrase means as it is often used for when you can’t be bothered to do something. This could be either out of school or in school which would meet my conclusion from my questionnaire.
Also, ‘Reputations, are they really worth it?’ People around the age of 16-18 still feel that they need to fit with different people or that they need to attract attention to themselves by doing something that they regret. This would give those people advice and the truth behind reputations and making them think that they should think about things before they do them.
Also, ‘The best ways to apply for Uni and succeed!’ It has became extremely hard to get into University, so this would definitely grab the students attention and the word ‘succeed’ is a buzz word which can be emotive to the reader.
Also, ‘10 tips to update your wardrobe’ Students who enjoy fashion and want to look trendy would love the fact that there are tips on enhancing their look. This would make them be interested in the magazine and want to purchase it.
For the incentive I chose to use ‘Discount on student card!’ I feel that all of the cover lines and the incentive works’ well and I must follow them through with my music magazine.

The central images shows direct mode of address by looking towards the camera lens which attracts the target audience. Many students would be drawn upon the fact that the girl on the cover is looking at them, and would make them want to read about what is in the magazine.
The colour of the books that she is holding in her arms compliment the colour scheme that I have chosen. This makes the magazine look more attractive. However, because of the central image and the colour 'pink' this could be portrayed as being more of a female magazine. This must be thought about while I design the colour scheme for my music magazine.

The masthead 'SPN' is a very catchy name for a magazine, however I feel that on this certain front cover it doesn't stand out from the rest of the writing. I did try to make the masthead font size larger, but it would gone over the central image, therefore distracting the direct mode of address. I feel that the black font for the masthead works well and helps it stand out a little bit more, than if it was red or blue.

The seal of approval is in the right place for this magazine front cover, however it is a bit too plain. When i design a seal of approval for my music magazine i will make sure i don't have it as one of the colours in the colour scheme. It doesn't stand out enough. Although, the writing that has been put on the seal approval would definitely attract the target audience because of the colour and the short and sharp phrase '£1 TODAY' Students would want to buy something that is cheaper on the day.
There could be some improvement on the detail and how it stands out from the rest of the other objects on the front cover.

I have placed a subheading underneath the masthead 'Sponne's Must Have'. I have done this to add a moto/phrase to the magazine. This also persuades the students to buy the magazine because students always have to have the latest thing that is around, especially as its in school.
Hello, my name is Tiffany Roberts and I am studying Media as one of my A Levels at Sponne Technology school. As part of our coursework we have been asked by our teachers to create a music magazine in which relates to a certain genre we like.
I am going to blog the process of making this magazine with pictures, evaluations and notes which will give the best end result in my magazine.
